I've liked the look of the Cherokee (XJ) since I was in my 20's. At the time they were new on the market and I could never afford one. I drive a lot of miles and after owning 2 new vehicles (99 Ford Ranger/03 Toyota Rav4) I've vowed to never waste my money on a new vehicle again.

After getting rid of my Rav4. My wife found an 86 2dr XJ on Craig's List one evening and we bought it for $620. It ran really good but looked like crap. The rubber around the rear quarter windows was rotting out and the glass was about to fall out. The roof rack leaked a little when it was raining and the muffler needed replacing.

I knew that Chrysler had purchased Jeep sometime in the 80's but didn't realize that it was a few months after mine was built. Chrysler did not change the look of the vehicle but did change the drivetrain enough to make these years different enough to have a site dedicated to these early XJ's. The 84 thru 86 XJ's are often referred to "Stage 1" XJ's.

This site has been created to help others that own what I call an "Early XJ". These are the XJ's built by AMC/Jeep before Chrysler purchased AMC/Jeep/Renault in 1987. They include the 1984, 1985, and 1986 models.
